Day 1 Arrive Sandakan – Labuk Bay –  Rainforest Discovery Centre (L/D)

Pickup from Sandakan airport and proceed to Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary located about 38 kilometres (45-60 minutes drive) from Sandakan. This privately run sanctuary is located within an oil palm estate and offers a unique chance to see proboscis monkeys. These monkeys are wild but habituated and often get very close to visitors. The proboscis monkeys at Labuk Bay live in a fragmented habitat surrounded by an oil palm plantation. As there is insufficient food the monkeys receive a supplementary diet. The morning feeding time commences at 0930 hours when groups of proboscis monkeys from the nearby forest and mangroves head to the wooden platform for a free meal. The behavior (and diet) of these proboscis monkeys is very different from the monkeys that you will later see in the Menanggul River at Sukau. Labuk Bay offers a unique opportunity to get close to these normally shy creatures.   Around 1100 hours depart the sanctuary and transfer to MY Nature Resort in Sepilok. Have lunch at MY Nature Resort. Then free at leisure to relax in the resort’s rainforest setting. 1600 hours –  proceed to the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), an education centre located within the Kabili Sepilok Forest Reserve. Visit the plant discovery garden and see native orchids, pitcher plants, arid land plants, aquatic plants and more. Then experience the rainforest from the centre’s 147 metres long canopy walkway, which is up to 28 metres above the forest floor in places. The walkway and two towers offer a unique way of seeing Sabah’s rainforest and are an excellent place for bird watching. Over 250 species of birds are found here. Take a seat and wait until dusk when giant flying squirrels are sometimes seen launching themselves from the trees near the canopy and hornbills often fly overhead. Depart the centre around 1830-1900 hours and return to MY Nature Resort. Dinner and overnight at MY Nature Resort.

Day 2 Sepilok – Kinabatangan River – Abai (B/L/D)

After breakfast, check-out and proceed to the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary where captive orangutans are reintroduced into the wild.  You will be able to observe them at their feeding stations in the rainforest and at the nursery (if open). Watch the feeding session at 1000 hours. Then  proceed to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC). This centre rescues captured sun bears and is involved in sun bear conservation, welfare rehabilitation and education. Over 30 sun bears live at the centre in the bear house and outdoor enclosures.

1100-1115 hours depart Sepilok and proceed to the jetty in Sandakan. 1145 – 1200 hours depart for a 1-hour boat cruise up the Lower Kinabatangan River, passing pristine mangrove forests and searching for wildlife. Arrive at Abai Jungle Lodge, check-in and have lunch. Free to relax or explore the surrounding area on the nature boardwalk. 1630 hours go on a cruise in search of proboscis monkeys, birds, reptiles and other wildlife. As night falls witness the glittering of fireflies on the mangrove trees. Return to the lodge for dinner.  After dinner, go on a guided night walk around the Lodge’s nature boardwalk and search for insects, birds and other wildlife. Overnight at the Abai Jungle Lodge.

Day 3 Pitas Lake – Abai – Sukau (B/L,/D)

0630 hours – depart on a boat trip for bird watching and wildlife viewing at the nearby Pitas Lake. Return to lodge around 0800 hours and have breakfast. After breakfast visit the nearby Abai village and participate in a tree planting project. Enjoy a local-style lunch prepared and served by the villagers. After lunch, cruise upriver to Sukau, searching for wildlife along the way. Arrive Sukau and check-in to Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. 1630 hours go on a river cruise up the Kinabatangan River to the Menanggul River in search of proboscis monkeys, birds and other wildlife. Return to the lodge for dinner. Overnight at the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge.

Day 4  Sukau – Abai – Sandakan (B/L)

After breakfast depart the lodge at 0700 hours and return to Sandakan by boat. The 2½ hour journey offers another chance to see wildlife. Around 0830 hours stop at Abai Jungle Lodge for a short break before continuing your journey downriver. Arrive at Sandakan jetty and proceed to hotel or Sandakan airport for flight out. Have lunch at the airport or a local restaurant.
