Day 1 Arrival Kuching

Upon arrival, meet and transfer to hotel. Rest of the day free at leisure. Overnight at Riverside Majestic Hotel (or equivalent).

Day 2 Kuching – Nanga Sumpa (B/L/D)

0800 hours pick up from hotel in Kuching and drive to Batang Ai reservoir. Along the way stop at Lachau Bazaar. Stroll around the shops and the small native market and have an early lunch in a local coffee shop. Then continue your journey, arriving at Batang Ai Lake around 1330-1400 hours.  Board a longboat and travel upriver to Nanga Sumpa, arriving at approx. 1530 hours, although the exact time will depend on river conditions. Settle in at Borneo Adventure’s lodge and have dinner. Evening free at leisure. Overnight at Nanga Sumpa lodge.

Day 3  Enseluai Waterfall – Jambu Longhouse – Nanga Sumpa (B/L/D)

Following breakfast hike the jungle trails along the river. Then continue upriver by longboat. Our destination is the scenic Enseluai waterfall. Along the way (if conditions are suitable) your boatman may stop to demonstrate fishing Iban-style using a jala or throw net. Visit Jambu longhouse, which is located approximately 30 minutes upriver from Nanga Sumpa Lodge. Jambu is a relatively small community with 8 families. It is the furthermost and most isolated community on the Delok River. After visiting Jambu continue your journey upriver. Arrive at the waterfall and have time to relax, swim and enjoy the rainforest surroundings. Enjoy a riverside BBQ lunch prepared by your Iban hosts. Return to the lodge. Dinner is served in the lodge with local delicacies to enhance the meal. Overnight at Nanga Sumpa lodge.

Day 4 Nanga Sumpa – Kuching (B/L)

Breakfast in the lodge. Then free at leisure to relax, swim in the river or take some photos around Nanga Sumpa. At 1115 hours have an early lunch in the lodge. Depart around 1200 hours and travel downriver to the Batang Ai Lake jetty, arriving approx. 1330 hours. Then travel overland back to Kuching. Arrive in Kuching approx. 1830 hours and be dropped off at your hotel. Riverside Majestic Hotel (or equivalent).

Day 5 Kuching – Kota Kinabalu – Sandakan (B)

Check out and transfer to the airport for departure to Kota Kinabalu and on to Sandakan. Pickup from Sandakan airport and transfer to Four Points by Sheraton Hotel. Rest of the day free at leisure. Overnight at Four Points Hotel.

Day 6 Sepilok – Kinabatangan River – Abai (B/L/D)

After breakfast, check-out and pick up from your hotel and proceed to the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary where captive orangutans are reintroduced into the wild. You will be able to observe them at their feeding stations in the rainforest and see a video presentation on the orangutan rehabilitation programme. 1145 – 1200 hours depart for a 1-hour boat cruise up the Lower Kinabatangan River, passing pristine mangrove forests and searching for wildlife. Arrive at Abai Jungle Lodge and have lunch. After lunch, free to relax or explore the surrounding area on the nature boardwalk. 1630 hours go on a cruise in search of proboscis monkeys, birds, reptiles and other wildlife. As night falls witness the glittering of fireflies on the mangrove trees. Return to the lodge for dinner.  After dinner, go on a guided night walk around the Lodge’s nature boardwalk. Overnight at the Abai Jungle Lodge.

Day 7 Pitas Lake – Abai Village – Sukau – Menanggul River (B/L/D)

0630 hours – depart on a boat trip for bird watching and wildlife viewing at the nearby Pitas Lake. Return to lodge around 0800 hours and have breakfast. After breakfast visit the nearby Abai village and participate in a tree planting project.  Enjoy a local-style lunch prepared and served by the villagers. After lunch, cruise upriver to Sukau, searching for wildlife along the way. Arrive Sukau and check-in to Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. 1630 hours go on a river cruise up Kinabatangan River to the Menanggul River in search of proboscis monkeys, birds and other wildlife. Return to the lodge for dinner. Overnight at the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge.

Day 8  Sukau – Abai – Sandakan (B/L)

After breakfast depart the lodge at 0700 hours and return to Sandakan by boat. The 2½ hour journey offers another chance to see wildlife. Around 0830 hours stop at Abai Jungle Lodge for a short break before continuing your journey downriver. Arrive at Sandakan jetty and visit the central market. Around 1100 hours proceed to hotel or Sandakan airport for flight out. Have lunch at the airport or a local restaurant.
