Day 1 Bintulu – Similajau National Park (L, D)

Meet at local hotel or airport in the morning and drive to Similajau National Park. Have lunch and check in at park accommodation at around 1400 hrs. Mid-afternoon go on a nature walk on the “Educational Trail” around the Park HQ. This consists of 450 metres of boardwalk across the mangrove forest and another 600 metres into the jungle. Continue further to do the “Circular Trail”. The late afternoon and evening is at your own leisure to relax or watch the tropical sunset which is visible most evenings from the beach. After dusk take a night boat cruise up the Likau River through the mangrove forest and mixed dipterocarp forest to look for crocodiles or some other nocturnal animals. Then return to Park HQ and retire to your accommodation.

Day 2 Similajau National Park (B, L, D)

After breakfast, trek along the main trail to Turtle Beach 1 (6.5 km one way). Much of the trail passes through coastal forest and with some luck it may be possible to spot wildlife such as monkeys, birds, Borneo gibbons, banded langurs and wild pigs. The flora consists mostly of Kerangas forest and mixed dipterocarp forest. Your guide will point out well known plants species found here including the “Tongkat Ali” (Eurycoma longifolia) a local “Viagra”, and the Bintangor trees (Calophyllum Lanigerum) presently being researched as a possible AIDS remedy. Retrace your journey along the main trail ending up at the View Point before returning to the Park HQ. A packed lunch is provided along the way. The evening is at your own leisure with an option of a dusk walk on the beach before retiring to bed.
