On the road to Tuba Longhouse, Sarawak, Malaysia.

Day 1 Kuching – Tuba Longhouse (L, D)

Pick up from your hotel in the morning and depart for Tuba longhouse. This itinerary combines the thrills (and spills) of an exciting 4WD trip with the rich cultural experience of a homestay in an Iban village. A few stops will be made along the way. Visit the colourful native market in Serian town where a variety of jungle produce such as edible ferns, bamboo shoots and unusual tropical fruit are on display. Stop by to view wild orchids and several species of pitcher plants. Lunch en route. After leaving the relative comfort of the paved road the track quickly deteriorates into a series of steep and hazardous inclines, caked with thick mud and loose gravel. Conditions will vary according to prevailing weather but passengers should be prepared to assist as the vehicle may get temporarily trapped or grounded. There should also be time to enjoy the changing scenery as the trail passes through oil palm plantations, rice fields and pepper farms. The final stage of the journey is a more sedate and rather more comfortable ride in a longboat to reach the attractive village of Tuba. Here warm traditional Iban hospitality awaits the tired traveller and the village hosts provide comfortable accommodation in their homes. In the late afternoon proceed for a boat ride in search of wildlife. Monkeys, hornbills and various other kinds of birds are often seen in this area. Return to Tuba longhouse in the evening. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the longhouse.

Day 2 Tuba Longhouse – Kuching (B, L)

After breakfast visit the local school and the surrounding area before bidding farewell to your hosts. Proceed to Serian and continue overland to Kuching. Lunch is provided en route. Drop off at your hotel or airport in the mid afternoon (subject to road conditions).
