Day 1 Lahad Datu – Kawag Danum Rainforest Lodge (L/D)

Kawag Danum Rainforest Lodge is located on the buffer zone of the Danum Valley Conservation Area. The lodge is set amongst lowland dipterocarp forest of the logged-over Kawag Forest Area, located within the Ulu Segama Malua Forest Reserve. Scientific expeditions have found that the logged over forest is coming back to life and certain species are thriving in the disturbed forest. Kawag offers good wildlife watching opportunities. Wildlife found at Kawag includes orangutan, pygmy elephants, wild cattle, deer, monkeys and over 100 species of birds. The 20-room lodge offers basic but comfortable rooms and provides a budget alternative to the more famous Borneo Rainforest Lodge at Danum Valley.

Pick up from Lahad Datu airport and drive for approx. 1 hour and 30 minutes. Arrive at Kawag Danum Rainforest Lodge around noon and check-in to your room. Have lunch at the lodge before departing the lodge at 1500 hours to go on a guided walk on the Kawag trail. Experience the rainforest a search for wildlife along the trail. A range of birds, monkeys, pygmy elephants and banteng (a species of wild cattle) have been sighted on the Kawag trail. Return to the lodge. 1900 hours enjoy dinner at the lodge. 2030 hours go on night drive to search for wildlife (weather permitting). Overnight at Kawag Danum Rainforest Lodge.

Day 2 Kawag Danum Rainforest Lodge (B/L/D)

0600 hours walk to the lodge’s Observation Tower to see some of Kawag’s rich birdlife. Return to the lodge and have breakfast at 0700 hours. 0900 hours go trekking on the Waterfall trail, looking out for wildlife along the way. Arrive at the waterfall and enjoy a dip in the cool waters. Then walk back to Kawag lodge. Lunch is served at 1230 hours. 1500 hours go on guided walk to a viewpoint, which offers panoramic views of the rainforest. Return to the lodge. 1900 hours enjoy dinner in the lodge. After dinner at own leisure or go on a short night walk near the lodge. Overnight at Kawag Danum Rainforest Lodge.

Day 3 Kawag Danum Rainforest Lodge – Lahad Datu (B/L)

A leisurely breakfast followed by at own leisure (go on a walk near the lodge or try tubing in the Kawag River). Have lunch followed by check out. Then depart at 1330 hours for the scheduled transfer to Lahad Datu airport for flight out. Arrive in Lahad Datu around 1500 hours.
