Itinerary
Peraya Homestay is located in a small Bidayuh village in the Padawan area, approximately 50 kilometres from Kuching. It offers a great opportunity to experience Bidayuh hospitality and enjoy a range of activities. These include traditional bamboo rafting, a riverside picnic, jungle trekking and farm visits. Peraya homestay consists of a ‘mini longhouse’ made of wood and bamboo. A mountain-fed jungle stream flows past the homestay accommodation.
Day 1 Kuching – Semenggoh – Peraya Homestay (L/D)
0800 hours pick up from hotel and depart for Semenggoh Wildlife Centre. Over 20 orangutans live in forest within the nature reserve and often return to the centre at feeding times. Upon arrival, take a short walk along a trail to the feeding area to watch the orangutans come down from the trees for a free meal.
Depart Semenggoh and continue by road to Peraya Bidayuh village. The Bidayuh or Land Dayak are the second largest Dayak tribe in Sarawak. Traditionally they lived in longhouses but today most Bidayuh settlements are villages with individual houses rather than longhouses. Upon arrival meet your host family and settle in to your accommodation. Have lunch then take a walk through the village. Visit the head house were the villagers keep skulls from the headhunting era. Continue your walk, passing farmland and jungle before reaching a picturesque waterfall. Take a dip in the cool waters before returning to the homestay. Time to relax before enjoying a Bidayuh-style dinner. Overnight at Peraya homestay.
Day 2 Traditional Bamboo Rafting – Kuching
Enjoy breakfast and a cup of local coffee. After a short safety briefing board traditional bamboo rafts and start rafting down the rainforest-lined river. Your guide will navigate a series of mini rapids and proceed downriver. If you wish you can join in and help guide the raft along the river. Stop at a picturesque pebble beach. Here your guides will prepare lunch, set up a BBQ and cook a range of local dishes in bamboo tubes. Join your guide and search for edible jungle products such such ferns or bamboo shoots. After lunch return to the homestay to collect your bags. Say goodbye to your hosts and return to Kuching.
(We also offer a bamboo rafting day trip for those with less time).
