Robert Basiuk is co-founder and Executive Director of Borneo Adventure. Born in Canada with a background in environmental science, he first came to Sarawak in 1983 to work as a biologist with the National Parks and Wildlife Office. The establishment of Borneo Adventure was the start of a 30-year collaboration with the Iban communities in Batang Ai, a project that has been recognized as a model for community-based tourism in Malaysia.
Robert has worked with the Sarawak Tourism Board (Deputy CEO, 1996-98) and as a Tourism and Environmental Management Specialist providing consultancy services for national park management planning, tourism development and environmental planning. Over the past 25+ years, he has worked throughout South-east Asia.
Robert is co-editor of the book ‘Batang Ai – Rainforest, Wildlife & People’ and a trustee of WWF-Malaysia. His pastimes include mountain biking, trail running, SCUBA diving, skiing and hiking. Robert is the race director of the annual Sarawak Challenge, a adventure race held near Kuching each year.
